CAREERS EVENING

In order to assist you in pursuing your ambitions we have organised a careers information evening to provide you with information and advice.

The evening promises to be extremely informative and enjoyable as all the speakers are expertly positioned in the beauty industry with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
We envisage this as been the first step in assisting students when they finish their training and are also looking at other initiatives to help you realise your ambitions.

Some of the topics for the evening will include:

 Starting a business and how to contact the various support agencies.
 Opportunities that are available in the beauty industry to include working from home/mobile or part-time in Salons.
 Opportunities in retail/sales/cosmetics/skincare and training.
 Starting as a freelance therapist/make-up artist from home or mobile and progressing to owning your own business.
 Expectations of employers.
 Current trends in the industry and how to maximise your earning potential.

Time: 7.00pm to 9.45pm

Venue: Waverley Business Park, Old Naas Road, Dublin 12.

Cost: €40 or €10 for past or current Academy students. booking early is advisable as places will be limited.

The Agenda.

7.00pm to 7.40pm: Derek O Kelly – Principal and Director at the Irish Academy of Beauty.


Derek will give an overview of the many opportunities and emerging trends in the beauty industry.  He will also give a brief background on starting a business in the beauty industry and will supply contact details for the relevant agencies and support organisations for those wishing to start a business.

7.40pm to 8.20pm: Janette Ryan – Training Manager for L’Oreal.

Janette is a qualified beautician and tutor.  She was senior trainer for a range of The Graham Anthony Cosmetic skincare brands including the Decleor Brand.  She recently moved to the L’Oreal group and is manager of training for their Vichy and La Roche Posay Brands. Janette will talk about opportunities in retailing of cosmetic and skincare brands, pharmacies, sales reps and training.

8.20pm to 9.00pm: Kathleen Garvey – Manager of Drogheda Branch – Free Spirit.


Kathleen is a qualified beautician, massage therapist and tutor.  She was recently appointed manager of Drogheda branch of Free Spirit, Irelands only salon chain offering hair, beauty, nails and health treatments.  Kathleen was previously senior manager in Marks & Spencer’s human resource department. 
Kathleen will talk about opportunities and emerging trends in the salon industry.  She will also discuss CV preparation, interview skills and expectations of employers.

9.00pm to 9.40pm: Rhona Cullinan – Director of The Powder Room Girls & Irelands Number 1 Make-up Artist.


Rhona recently set up her own company called the powder room girls, Irelands first dedicated agency for makeup artists, hair stylists and style consultants.  She was also recently voted Irelands Number 1 makeup artist by the Irish Beauty Professional Association and is renowned as one of Irelands leading celebrity makeup artists.

Rhona will talk about the opportunities of working from home or mobile and how to maximise your earning potential.  She will also briefly discuss her journey to owning her own business.
