Rhona Cullinan is one of Irelands leading make-up artists with more than 15 years experience in wedding make-up. She is head of make-up at the Irish Academy and has helped develop their make-up curriculum over the past two years. She was instrumental in helping the Academy produce Irelands first make-up DVD and will co-author Irelands first make-up book with principal Derek O Kelly. She is also a director of the newly formed company The Powder Room Girls and was nominated for Irish make-up artist of the year 2008. Rhona was also voted in the top ten make-up artists by Wedding Belle Magazine (2007) and is resident expert on one of Irelands leading websites for the wedding industry (realweddings.ie).
She says “The wedding market is now one of the biggest growth areas for make-up artists with the bridal party sparing no expense to looking their best on the day. Wedding makeovers have great earning potential for make-up artists as the whole process can involve 2 or 3 consultations with several people to be catered for. The potential for repeat business is also enormous as members of the bridal party will refer you to family and friends. Providing make-up services for bridal and wedding parties is a very specialist area, there are so many issues that crop up outside of the normal remit of the make-up artist. Your ability to deal with unforeseen circumstances, and adapt your service to suit will set you apart from other wedding make-up artists. In the two day master class I will also discuss many of the unexpected challenges make-up artists will encounter when providing make-up services for wedding parties”.
This 2 day master class in bridal make-up will be the first in a series of new make-up and hair styling workshops at the Academy. view course details

FAMILY MATTERS
One of Irelands leading massage and beauty colleges, attributes its success to family teamwork, and definitely exemplifies the cliché of keeping it in the family.
The Irish Academy of massage and beauty training, consists of seven family members, with a variety of management and business skills among them.
Most of the staff are also qualified in many of the disciplines that are offered on their curriculum.
The Academy was started almost 12 years ago by college principal Derek O Kelly, who in recent years has been joined by his two daughters Michelle and Natasha , his two sisters Breda and Teresa and his fiancée Veronica Clinton and her brother Ray. They now offer one of the most comprehensive cirriculums in part time massage and beauty therapy courses.
Derek thinks that part of the company’s success is the family values which form the ethos of the company. He explains, “I never planned to have family members in the business, but as it developed, I identified that people who were close to me, had a variety of business skills needed to grow the company. It was a gradual process, over five years, with different members joining along the way. I have no doubt that part of our success is down to the family input.
We are a family company, with family values, and place a high emphasis on treating our customers with care and respect; just as we would like our family members to be treated. This ethos is instilled from the top down and is expected of anyone who works and teaches with us. This has resulted in us attracting some of the best trainers in the country and producing the best results, with some of the departments achieving 100%, and 98.5% pass rates.
The base line criteria for working with our company is that our employees care about their duties and the services they deliver.
Our aim is to be the best at what we do, and produce an environment that people enjoy working and learning in”.
Indications are that the family approach is working, as people travel from around Ireland to study at the Academy.
The Irish Academy conduct part time programmes all year round and are currently enrolling for courses in massage, beauty therapy, make-up, teacher training, gel nails and spray tanning.
Most of their certificate and diploma programmes are validated by ITEC, an international awards council.
